TUESDAY, Aug. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables may help protect some smokers from lung cancer, a new European study suggests.
But, the researchers stressed that quitting smoking will do far more to reduce risk than "an apple a day" or having a salad for lunch.
In the study, participants who ate a diet that contained a diverse mix of fruits and vegetables appeared to have a 27 percent lowered risk of a common type of lung cancer, the researchers reported.

A low-cost drug at 1.30 pounds per day could save thousands of people suffering from heart failure.
A study of the pill, involving 6,500 patients in 37 countries, including Britain, showed it cuts deaths and hospital admissions by 25 per cent.
A doctor involved in the trial, the largest published on heart failure, said that bolstered by the results, he would be prescribing it for his patients as soon as possible, reports the Telegraph.
The drug, ivabradine, is already licenced for angina, so it is known to be safe. Doctors are allowed to prescribe it for heart failure patients while the new licence is being approved, according to the journal Lancet.

Some 5.5 million Canadians – 1 in 5 of the total population – smoke cigarettes. In an editorial article, the CMA is now urging provincial governments to fund smoking treatments. Only Quebec provides reimbursement for both prescription, and over-the-counter, smoking solutions. Such reimbursement is more widely offered in the UK, Australia, and to some degree the US.
The authors of the editorial argue that taxpayers would benefit if smoking treatments were paid for.

Athens - Greece, home to Europe's largest percentage of smokers, on Wednesday imposed its third and toughest ban on smoking in enclosed public places.
Under the new law, smoking is banned in all indoor public venues, with the exception of casinos and bars larger than 300 square metres - which have a nine-month extension. The law also puts new restrictions on tobacco advertising.
Smokers who break the law are liable to fines ranging from €50 to €500 (about R500 to R5 000). The owners of the establishments risk tougher penalties of 500 to €10 000, with repeat offenders risking the revocation of their licences.

MYFOXNY.COM - Public buildings, subways and buses, restaurants and playgrounds - they are all a no-go when it comes to smoking. But are New York City parks and beaches next?
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn are in favor of the plan, and a press conference to announce support of the smoking ban was only put off due to scheduling conflicts, The Staten Island Advance reported.
In 2002, Bloomberg took on smoking in public places and has spent a sizable chunk of his personal fortune on smoking cessations campaigns worldwide. But now parks in beaches appear to be in the crosshairs as well.
Bloomberg initially was hesitant to adopt this suggestion from City Health Commissioner, Dr. Thomas A. Farley, asking for further studies on the effects of secondhand smoke in parks on people's health. But it appears that he is now ready to support the ban.

The low-carb group followed a program based similar to Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrate intake was restricted to 20 grams per day for 3 months, followed by a 5 gram per day increase each week until the goal weight was attained. In the beginning of the diet, carbohydrates came from non-starchy vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli, and cucumbers. Participants could eat as many foods rich in fat and protein as satisfied them. The low-fat group was instructed to restrict the number of calories consumed to 1200 to 1500 calories per day for women and 1500 to 1800 calories per day for men, and the amount of calories from fat could not exceed 30% of total calories. Additionally, both groups were provided with a multivitamin to help prevent possible nutritional gaps.
