WHEN IT comes to health and fitness, many women can probably relate to Lisa Hendrick.

She describes herself as a cardio girl, but she's no gym rat. She doesn't count calories, but the 31-year-old maintains a normal weight and is conscious about what she eats, especially now that she is five months pregnant.

From the beginning, Hendrick was full of questions about the changes in her body. Most of all, she wanted to know what was normal when it came to weight gain and exercise.

"Whatever I do, I want it to be beneficial to me and the baby," says Hendrick, of Walnut Creek.

All expectant mothers want the best for their developing babies. But "normal" is not the same for everyone. How much weight you should gain during pregnancy depends on if you were underweight or overweight at conception. It is the same with exercise levels. Ultimately, experts say pregnant women should listen to their bodies and consult with their doctors. Read More...

SATURDAY, Aug. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Experts used to advise parents to simply sever ties when their children left home to start college, but they now recommend letting go in phases and stages.

"A generation ago, people like me used to advise parents to cut the cord. Let the students figure things out for themselves. But over the years, we've moderated our advice. We talk to parents about 'the power of letting go,'" Levester Johnson, vice president of student affairs at Butler University in Indianapolis, said in a university news release. Read More...

It's easy to stay fit during your pregnancy with four simple strengthening exercises that you can do anytime, anywhere, no equipment required. These functional "4 for Life" exercises comprise a mini full-body conditioning routine that will help you maintain strength, prevent some of the aches and pains of pregnancy and prepare for delivery of your baby.

The four exercises are: squats to work the lower body, push-ups for the upper body, pelvic tilts for the abdominals, and back extensions for the muscles of the spine. By learning to handle your own body weight, you develop fundamental muscle strength and become more efficient in the way you move throughout the day.

Always remember to check with your doctor first, but if you are a healthy, active woman you can generally continue a program of mild to moderate strength training during your pregnancy. Regular exercise (3 X week) is preferable to intermittent activity, and these four moves make it easy to be consistent. Do one set of Read More...

NOT so long ago we were discussing "conditioning" which seems to be the "buzzword" around sports people especially.

It seems that these days there are "conditioning" coaches of every description for sporting teams and even for individuals. Conditioning coaches are now an integral part to help prepare athletes for their chosen code.

One of our sons has studied personal training and sports conditioning. He is always on my case to stay fit and healthy and he is our resident "trainer".

His advice about how we as a family need conditioning physically is invaluable yet at times frustrating because he is famously forthright about his views. Read More...
It's amazing, the opinions a woman can come up with when she's nine and a half months pregnant (for the record, it feels like 14).

I have spent the last seven weeks of this pregnancy down for the count, with nothing for entertainment but a few mediocre books and the remote control.

As a typical stay-at-home mother of three young children, I don't usually have time to watch daytime television. Normally, it's a luxury enjoyed in 15-minute spurts, always with a load of whites to keep me company.

Who knew I was missing out on so much? Read More...

There are many lists of freshman-dorm necessities floating around the Internet, but one circulating among parents in Los Angeles is especially thorough. It's an Excel spreadsheet that usually lands in the in-box with a disclaimer from the sender saying something like, "I know it's a bit much, but it's nice to have everything spelled out."

This particular list contains more than 100 items, including Dixie cups, Blistex, mini cutting board, stamps, ruler, Wite-Out, thank you notes and small vacuum. Some people see a robo-mom behind it, others maybe a just plain neurotic parent. After all, an 18-year-old who has managed to get into college is surely capable of buying his or her own Blistex. But there is something else in the time, care and energy spent by the unknown parent who put it together: the desire, however absurd, to take care of everything, if for just one last time.

"I think the idea of making the list, and thinking of the ruler and the Wite-Out -- it makes us feel like w Read More...

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy increases baby's birth weight as well as the newborn’s risk of obesity later in life.

High birth weight predicts body mass index (BMI) later in life, which suggests that excessive weight gain during pregnancy could raise the long-term risk of obesity-related diseases in the child. High birth weight could also raise the risk of other diseases later in life, including asthma, allergies and cancer.

Here’s another “optimizing” ingredient to add to your grocery list: Probiotics. In a Norwegian study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, researchers learned that mothers who consumed milk with a probiotic supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding cut the chances of their child having eczema in half.

We are always hearing about how to optimize the health of our babies with what we ingest during pregnancy; it can get a little hectic trying to squeeze in the Omega 3s, Vitamin D, iron and calcium with all the pregnancy food warnings and aversions.

But this study caught my attention because I’m kind of intrigued by probiotics in general. And I have friends with eczema and they hate it. Babies with eczema, no fun at all. Read More...

LONDON - Pregnant women who are overweight face a serious risk of having a premature baby, according to research published in the British Medical Journal yesterday.

WEDNESDAY, July 21 (HealthDay News) -- Women can drink a cup of coffee or one soft drink a day during pregnancy and not worry that it might put them at risk of miscarriage or preterm birth, according to new guidelines released by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

The professional group issued the information from its Committee on Obstetric Practice, which reviewed studies on the topic before making a decision.

"Finally, we have good evidence to show that having a cup of coffee a day is fine and it poses no risk to the fetus," said Dr. William H. Barth Jr., chairman of the committee on obstetric practice and chief of the division of maternal-fetal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Read More...

Despite a broken family, you can still be involved in your child’s upbringing. Here’s how

When a marriage breaks down and one partner gets custody of the children, it leads to a lot of heartburn for the other parent. He/she (in most cases, it’s the father), gets relegated to weekend-visits at best. Such parents become the forgotten victims of divorce, who end up struggling to stay part of their children’s lives.

Anxiety
The biggest cause for worry among the parent who loses the custody battle is how to continue playing an important part in their child’s life. When you don’t see your kids everyday, it can be tough to maintain a strong connection. But not living under the same roof doesn’t have to mean being less involved - there are lots of things you can do to be an active mom or dad. Read More...
